Programs
The Autism Society of Connecticut has a number of ongoing programs
that continue our mission of serving persons affected by autism spectrum
disorders within the State of Connecticut. E-mail us or call 888-453-4975

Orientation Programs
ASCONN developed our first Autism Orientation Program, designed to be a
one session overview for parents of children newly diagnosed with an
Autism Spectrum Disorder. This presentation was so well received, that
many education professionals requested that ASCONN provide the program for
in-service sessions to teaching professionals, as well as college and
university classes.
Since then, ASCONN has continued to conduct these presentations to
families, educators and even state government officials. In 2005, we added
an Autism Orientation for Faith-Based Communities. This program introduces
the issues special needs families face to what we consider the next, most
logical segment of the public, already attuned to compassion and support,
the faith-based community. Through this orientation, participants learn
what autism spectrum disorders are, what to expect regarding
characteristics of the disorders, basic teaching strategies, how to
develop a framework for spiritual development and gain insights into
understanding how to minister to the family. This is a non-denominational
presentation that easily adapts to any religious instruction program by
focusing on the how vs. the what.
In 2006, ASCONN added an orientation program geared for recreational
providers. Think YMCA/YWCA programs, community
after school and enrichment classes, summer camps, private programs
providing art, music or sports classes, Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts or any
other community activity/program.
For 2007, ASCONN continues to expand
the orientation programs with a Peer Group Workshop. As many schools
have requested awareness programs for their students, ASCONN has
developed a single presentation for groups aged K-12 which are geared to
the developmental understanding levels of the audience.
All of these presentations are currently available for scheduling by
contacting ASCONN by e-mail or telephone. Please be sure to specify which
orientation program you are interested in:
• Autism Orientation – New Diagnosis
• Autism Orientation – Educational Professionals
• Autism Orientation – Faith-Based Communities
• Autism Orientation – Recreational Providers
• Autism Orientation – Peer Groups
“Pat On The Back”
Are you always trying to come up with a thank you for the teachers,
therapists, paraprofessionals, respite providers and others who work for
and on behalf of your family member with autism? Administrators and
teachers, are you looking for a way to say “thank you” to your staff?
ASCONN is pleased to announce a new program, where you can give that
person a “Pat On The Back” for all their hard work on behalf of the autism
community.
For a small donation to ASCONN, your honoree will receive a certificate
stating that they have been awarded a “Pat On The Back” by ASCONN for
their work on behalf of persons with autism. The award certificate will be
accompanied by our choice of awareness item: car magnet, blue rubber
"solve the puzzle of autism" bracelet, enamel pin or other item.
For a larger donation, upgrade to the “Gold Star Pat On The Back” and
accompany the certificate with one of ASCONN’s
colored rubber bracelets
with a solid sterling silver puzzle charm. A “Pat On The Back” is
available for a $10 donation and a “Gold Star Pat On The Back” is
available for a $20 donation. A great idea for holiday gifts, end of the
school year, birthdays or other events.
